The History of Crested China:
Crested China started in the 1880s and its heyday came to an end following the Great Depression of the 1930s. However, potteries – like W H Goss which started the Crested China craze – were in existence long before, and are relevant to other forms of ceramic collecting (like decorative plates). Other manufacturers, seeing Crested China as a lucrative market, diverted from their usual products (everything from tableware to wash basins) to develop their own offerings as a sideline. While manufacturers – like Arcadian – were set up specifically as competitors to W H Goss in the Crested China market.
Crested China became popular when the British tourist industry began to flourish. It was important for the Victorian and Edwardian tourist to bring back a holiday memento, particularly a piece carrying the arms of the place they had visited.
In the late 1920's many comic/novelty items were produced.
The story behind Goss & Crested China is a fascinating one. The quality of the porcelain is excellent and given the conditions it was made in at the time, quite remarkable. Most of the pieces available today are now over 100 years old.
The outbreak of WWI gave rise to a new range of Crested China products based on a war theme, which included everything from new weapons of war (like planes, zeppelins, tanks, and submarines) to smaller more established items (like clips of bullets and grenades). These War Edition item are becoming very collectable. We have some of these items on our website.
